A Buffalo National River Elopement
Arkansas, with its stunning landscapes, free-flowing rivers, and majestic mountains, is a hidden gem for couples seeking a unique and intimate adventure elopement. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing Myka and Matt’s beautiful spring elopement in the breathtaking Buffalo National River area.
This blog post will share their special day and provide tips and inspiration for couples looking to elope in North Central and Northwest Arkansas. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy cabin wedding, a scenic overlook ceremony, or an adventurous celebration in the heart of nature, Arkansas has it all.
Myka and Matt’s Love Story
Myka and Matt’s love story is one of those that feels like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. They chose to elope in Arkansas, drawn by the state's natural beauty and the promise of an intimate celebration of their love. Their elopement took place on a perfect, cloudy April day, giving us the best soft lighting to work with. The day started with them getting ready in a cozy cabin nestled in the woods, a perfect setting for their private moment before the ceremony.
The Magic of the Buffalo National River in Arkansas
The Buffalo National River, located in the Boston Mountains of North Central Arkansas, is a stunning location for an elopement. As one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48 states, it offers pristine water, dramatic bluffs, and diverse wildlife. The river flows freely for 135 miles, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Some fun facts about the Buffalo National River:
- It was designated as America's first national river in 1972.
- The river features over 100 miles of hiking trails.
- It is home to several significant prehistoric sites, including ancient bluff shelters used by Native Americans.
- The area offers a variety of recreational activities, such as canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding.
The Perfect Elopement Day
Myka and Matt’s day was filled with so many heartfelt moments and incredibly beautiful scenery. After getting ready at their cabin, they made their way to a scenic overlook for their first look. The moment Myka walked out in her dress, Matt’s face lit up with joy. Their first look was an incredibly emotional moment. There is nothing that can really describe the feeling of seeing the love of your life moments before your "I do" moment.
They proceeded to exchange heartfelt vows at the overlook, with their close personal friend, who had legally become ordained in Arkansas, officiating the ceremony. The intimate setting, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Buffalo National River area, made their vows even more special. After celebrating their first kiss as a married couple, we took advantage of the soft, diffused light to capture stunning photos until sunset.

How to Plan Your Elopement in Arkansas
Planning an elopement can be both exciting and overwhelming, but here are some tips I have learned to help make the process smoother:
Choose the Location Right For You
- Buffalo National River: With its dramatic bluffs and serene waters, this is a top choice for nature-loving couples.
- Boston Mountains: Offering stunning overlooks and lush forests, the Boston Mountains are perfect for an intimate, scenic elopement.
- Northwest Arkansas: This area is known for its charming towns, beautiful lakes, and diverse landscapes, providing endless options for your ceremony.
Timing is Key
- Golden Hour: Plan your ceremony around the golden hour—the hour before sunset—for the most flattering and magical light. The warm, soft light during this time creates a romantic and ethereal atmosphere. As your photographer, I will make sure our timeline reflects the perfect opportunity for that sweet, golden light.
- Seasonal Considerations: Spring and fall are ideal times for an elopement in Arkansas, with mild temperatures and beautiful natural colors. Summer and winter both offer their own magic, too. If you're not sure what season is best, reach out and I will be happy to assist you with choosing the best timeframe!
Make it Personal
- Intimate Ceremony: Keep the ceremony small and intimate, focusing on what matters most—your love for each other.
- Personal Vows: Writing your own vows adds a deeply personal touch to your ceremony. If you cry, I will probably cry too. 😊
- Include Loved Ones: Consider having a close friend or family member become ordained to officiate your ceremony, making it even more special.
Legal Considerations
- Marriage License: Arkansas requires a marriage license, which you can obtain from any county clerk’s office in the state. There is no waiting period, and the license is valid for 60 days.
- Officiant: You need an officiant who is registered with the State to legally marry you. If you prefer a very intimate ceremony, I am ordained and can legally sign your marriage license in the State of Arkansas. This way it can be you, your love, and those dreamy photographs you are dreaming about.
